Calculate your exact Remitly fees instantly. Use our Remitly fee calculator to uncover hidden exchange rate markups, compare Express vs Economy speeds, and save.
Last week, I tried sending some emergency cash to my family. I look at the screen and it says the fee is only $3.99. But when the money hit the account, it was way lower than I expected. The exchange rate markup stole my money without me even noticing. We’ve all been there.
If you use Remitly, you need to know exactly what they take before you click send. I built this calculator so you can see the visible fees and the hidden markups. Big difference.

- Enter your USD amount: Tell the tool how much you wants to send.
- Pick your country: Select India, Mexico, or anywhere else. The tool pulls live rates for that place.
- Choose your speed: Pick “Express” if you needs it fast, or “Economy” if you can wait.

The “True Cost” Formula: How We Calculate Your Total Fees
Most people think the “Transfer Fee” is the only thing they pay. That is wrong. The True Cost is your transfer fee plus the exchange rate markup. If Remitly gives you a worse exchange rate than the real market, that is a fee. You can check the real market rates on Google.
How Remitly Fees Are Calculated
Remitly makes money in three different ways. You has to understand all of them to save money.
Upfront Transfer Fees (Fixed Costs)
This is the fee you see on the screen. It is usually $3.99 for Express delivery. If you use Economy, this fee often drops to $0.00.
Exchange Rate Markups Explained (0.5% to 3.0% Spreads)
This is the tricky part. Remitly buys currency at the mid-market rate and sells it to you at a lower rate. The difference is their “spread” or markup. It is usually between 0.5% and 3.0%. Our calculator exposes this number in the “True Cost Breakdown” section.
Payment Method Surcharges (Bank Transfer vs. Debit vs. Credit)
If you use a bank account or a debit card, you just pay the normal fees. If you use a credit card, Remitly adds a massive 3% surcharge.
WARNING: Avoiding Credit Card Cash Advance Fees
If you pay with a credit card, your bank might charge you a “cash advance” fee. This is separate from Remitly. It can cost you an extra $10 to $20. Never use a credit card to send money overseas. You can read more about cash advance fees on NerdWallet.
Remitly Express vs. Economy: Which Delivery Speed is Best?
You has a choice when you send money. Fast or slow.
Remitly Express: Speed at a Premium (Costs & Timelines)
Express uses your debit card to send money in minutes. It usually cost $3.99. It is perfect for emergencies.
Remitly Economy: Maximizing Cost Savings
Economy uses your bank account. It takes 3 to 5 business days. The transfer fee is usually $0.00, and you often get a slightly better exchange rate.
Do Weekends and Bank Holidays Impact Delivery Times?
Yes. If you choose Economy on a Friday night, the money won’t move until Monday morning. Bank holidays in your recipient’s country will also delay the cash.
