FAQs

How do I pay the Alaska registration fee?

If you go to a branch in person you can just hand them cash, a check, or your credit card. Alot of people just mail it in to skip the line. If you do that make sure you write a check or money order out to the “State of Alaska”. Dont ever mail them cash or put your card numbers in the envelope.

Can I get a refund of the Alaska registration?

Dont expect the state to give your money back if you sell your truck halfway through the year. The State of Alaska refuses to issue refunds for a partial registration. You only get cash back if you have written proof that you sold the car, totaled it, or registered it in a new state before your new registration period even started. If you meet those strict rules you gotta fill out Form 853 and hand over your plates and tabs to prove it.

What is the process for registering an out-of-state vehicle?

You gotta give the clerk your current out of state registration. You also need to hand over the actual title unless a bank still holds your loan. If you still owe money they just register the car and mail the new title directly to your lienholder. You fill out the Form V1 application. Then you just pay the $15 title fee along with whatever your tags cost.

How many days do I have to register a car in Alaska?

When you move up there or take a new job in the state you only get 10 days to register your car. That clock starts super fast. If you are just visiting on vacation they let you drive on your old plates for 60 days. But if you buy a car inside Alaska you get 30 days from the sale to transfer the title into your name.
