What Is Wisconsin Registration Fee Calculator?

Title Fee: The one-time fee paid when transferring ownership of a vehicle into your name. As of October 1, 2025, this fee is $214.50 — increased from the previous $164.50 as part of Wisconsin’s 2025 biennial budget.

Registration Fee: The flat annual fee required to legally operate your vehicle on Wisconsin public roads.

County and Municipal Wheel Tax: A local fee charged by specific counties and cities to fund local road maintenance. Both a county and a city can charge this simultaneously, meaning you may owe both.

EV and Hybrid Surcharge: An extra annual fee applied to electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to compensate for reduced gas tax contributions.

Truck Registration Fees: Variable annual fees based on the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of your truck, replacing the flat automobile fee.

How to Use the Wisconsin Registration Fee Calculator

Transaction Type: Choose “Renewal” if you already own the vehicle and need new tags. Choose “New Owner / Title” if you recently purchased the vehicle — this adds the $214.50 title fee to your first-year total.

Vehicle Type: Select “Auto” for standard cars, SUVs, and minivans. Select “Truck” if registering a pickup truck, cargo van, or heavier work vehicle.

Fuel Source: If you drive a plug-in hybrid or fully electric vehicle, select that option. The mandatory surcharge will be added automatically.

Location: Select your County and Municipality from the dropdowns. If your county or city is not listed, choose “All Other” — this means your area does not currently impose a local wheel tax.

Standard Passenger Vehicles (Cars, SUVs, Vans)

For most Wisconsin residents driving a gas-powered automobile, the annual registration fee is a flat rate that does not change based on the vehicle’s value, age, or purchase price.

Fee TypeAmountFrequency
Registration Fee$85.00Annual
Title Fee (Original or Transfer)$214.50One-Time
Lien Recording Fee$10.00One-Time (if financed)
Replacement / Duplicate Title$20.00If needed
New Plate Issuance Fee$6.00 per plateOne-Time (from Oct 1, 2026)

Important: The title fee increased to $214.50 effective October 1, 2025. Any estimate using the old $164.50 figure will be inaccurate for transactions processed after that date.

Truck Registration Fees by Gross Weight Class

Wisconsin registers trucks based on Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) — the combined weight of the vehicle and its maximum rated load. The heavier your truck’s GVW, the higher the annual fee. Unlike automobiles, trucks do not pay a flat fee.

ClassMax Gross WeightAnnual Fee
AUp to 4,500 lbs$100.00
BUp to 6,000 lbs$100.00
CUp to 8,000 lbs$116.60
XUp to 10,000 lbs$170.50
DUp to 12,000 lbs$229.90
EUp to 16,000 lbs$311.30
FUp to 20,000 lbs$391.60
GUp to 26,000 lbs$522.50
HUp to 32,000 lbs$669.90

Most personal pickup trucks — such as a Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado, or Ram 1500 — fall into Class C at $116.60 per year. Heavy-duty trucks (3/4 ton and above) typically fall into Class X or D.

Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Surcharges

Wisconsin funds its roads primarily through a gas tax (30.9 cents per gallon). Because EV and hybrid drivers purchase less gasoline, they contribute less to that fund. The state charges an annual surcharge to offset this difference.

Fuel TypeAnnual SurchargeTotal Annual Fee (Automobile Base)
Gas or Diesel$0.00$85.00
Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV)+$75.00$160.00
Battery Electric (BEV)+$175.00$260.00

Hybrids pay a lower surcharge than full EVs because they still purchase some gasoline and contribute partially to the gas tax fund at the pump. The $175 EV surcharge approximates what an average driver paying the gas tax would contribute annually across 10,000 to 12,000 miles of driving.

County Wheel Taxes (2026)

Counties levy a wheel tax in addition to the state registration fee. The fee is collected by WisDOT on behalf of the county.

Why Wisconsin Uses Flat Registration Fees

Unlike neighboring states such as Minnesota and Michigan, which charge registration fees based on the vehicle’s value (Ad Valorem), Wisconsin charges a flat fee regardless of whether the car is worth $3,000 or $80,000. This system is generally more favorable to owners of newer, more expensive vehicles, as their annual renewal cost is identical to someone driving an older car. The trade-off is a higher one-time title fee at the point of purchase.

Wisconsin Title Fee Explained

At $214.50, Wisconsin now has one of the highest flat title fees in the Midwest. This fee is identical whether you purchase a used economy car or a new luxury vehicle. If you financed the purchase, the DMV charges an additional $10.00 to record your lender’s lien on the title. Both fees are paid at the time of titling and are not recurring annual charges.

Registering a Vehicle from Out of State

If you move to Wisconsin and establish residency, you are required to register your vehicle immediately. There is no grace period. Driving with expired out-of-state plates can result in a traffic citation of $175 or more.

Documents required:

  • Original out-of-state title (not a photocopy)
  • Proof of identity (Wisconsin Driver’s License or ID)
  • Proof of sales tax paid (if you purchased the vehicle less than 90 days prior)

Fees you will pay:

FeeAmount
Title Conversion$214.50
Annual Registration (Auto)$85.00
Wheel TaxDepends on your new address
Sales Tax5% state + local (if applicable)

Special License Plates

The standard $85 registration fee covers standard Wisconsin plates. If you want specialty plates — such as Endangered Resources, University of Wisconsin, or Green Bay Packers plates — expect an additional issuance fee (typically $15) plus an annual donation fee (typically $25) on top of your regular registration.

Where Your Registration Money Goes

Wisconsin uses a constitutionally segregated transportation fund. Registration fees, wheel taxes, and the gas tax are all legally required to be spent on transportation-related purposes only. This includes maintenance of state highways (I-94, I-90, US-51), local road aid returned to counties and municipalities for pothole repairs and winter plowing, and bridge and infrastructure projects across the state. Wheel taxes collected by WisDOT on behalf of counties and cities are returned directly to those local governments.

How Much Is It to Register a Truck in Wisconsin?

For most personal pickup trucks, the annual registration fee is based on weight class rather than a flat automobile fee. A standard half-ton truck (Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado 1500, Ram 1500) typically falls in Class C with a GVW under 8,000 lbs, resulting in a $116.60 annual fee. Heavy-duty trucks (3/4 ton and above) with a GVW between 8,001 and 10,000 lbs fall into Class X at $170.50 per year.

For commercial vehicles used for business purposes — including semi-trucks, dump trucks, and large cargo vehicles — registration fees follow the same weight chart up to 8,000 lbs, but escalate significantly for heavier classes, potentially exceeding $2,500 per year. Commercial vehicles may also require a USDOT number and compliance markings.

Wisconsin EV Registration Fee

If you drive a fully electric vehicle — including a Tesla, Rivian, Chevy Bolt, or Nissan Leaf — you pay a $175 annual surcharge in addition to the $85 base registration fee, for a total of $260 per year. This surcharge applies to automobiles and light trucks registered with automobile-class fees. Plug-in hybrids (vehicles that run on both electricity and gasoline) pay a reduced $75 surcharge, since they still purchase gasoline and contribute to the gas tax fund.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do Wisconsin registration fees change?

Registration fees are set by the Wisconsin State Legislature and do not increase automatically. The most recent change was the 2025 biennial budget, which raised the title fee from $164.50 to $214.50 effective October 1, 2025. Local wheel taxes can be added or increased by county boards and municipal councils at any time throughout the year.

Can I get a refund if I sell my car mid-year?

Generally, no. Wisconsin does not refund remaining months of registration if you sell your vehicle after renewal. However, if you purchase a new vehicle, you can transfer your existing plates — and the remaining registration period — to the new vehicle rather than paying for a full new registration.

What happens if my registration expires?

Wisconsin charges a $10 late fee for renewals processed after the expiration date. More importantly, driving with expired registration tags puts you at risk of being stopped by law enforcement and issued a traffic citation.

Are Wisconsin registration fees tax-deductible on my federal return?

No. The IRS only allows vehicle registration fee deductions when fees are based on the value of the vehicle. Because Wisconsin charges flat fees based on vehicle type and weight rather than value, they are not deductible on your federal income tax return.

What is the difference between the county wheel tax and the municipal wheel tax?

The county wheel tax is charged by your county government, while the municipal wheel tax is charged by the city, village, or town within that county. These are completely separate fees. If you live in Madison (a city) within Dane County, you will owe both the City of Madison wheel tax and the Dane County wheel tax in addition to your state registration fee.

Do all Wisconsin residents pay a wheel tax?

No. Wheel taxes are optional and are only charged in counties and municipalities that have passed local ordinances to impose them. If your county and city are not listed on this calculator, you owe no local wheel tax beyond the standard state registration fee.
